Bake Me a Cake

I have great memories of my brother and I cooking up Betty Crocker cakes in my Easy Bake Oven as a child.  N and I have done all our baking in real ovens (see post here about our blueberry muffins), but I think that he and his new little sister will one day enjoy cooking in their own oven for mommy.

The Easy Bake Oven has been in the media a lot over the years (see most recent controversy over gender stereotypes here), and it returns now as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.  I’m not going to get into the politics of it all, but I will say that I don’t remember what color my oven was, just that my brother and I equally enjoyed using it.  Baking teaches kids to follow a recipe (multi-step task), wait patiently, and clean up messes.  Then of course there is a yummy reward for their hard work!
